Buddha Footsteps

Dhauli hill, eight km south of bhubaneswar, is on the banks of the river daya. It is here that emperor ashoka spent time in reflection. The carvings of the head and forelegs of an elephant emerge from the rock, to serve as a symbol. Elephants are frequently associated with the Buddha, either as the form the Buddha assumed in a previous incarnation, or as the sacred symbol of Buddhism itself. It is the oldest rock cut sculpture in India. On the hill stands the white-domed peace pagoda or shanty stupa with lush green paddy fields around it. Other places to see on the Buddhist trail include padmapur trail include padmapur near rayagada; balasore district; banpur near chilika; kuruma near konark among others.
