This railway is one of only two mountain railways to get world heritage status. It is the best example of a railway passenger in India, applying bold, technical solutions to establish an effective rail link across mountainous terrain. Starting from new jalpaiguri, the train covers a distance of 88 km, the entire trip taking eight hours. The fabled cart road runs close to the track in some places. By the time the train reaches chunabhati and crosses the loop, it has already climbed a height of 2,208 ft. the tiny engine then climbs again to more than 4,800 ft up to kurseong. Past tung, chutlinkpur and jore bungalow, one arrives at ghoom, which at 7,408 ft above sea level, is very charming.
