Nature has been benevolent to meghalaya. With an abundance of placid lakes and roaring waterfalls, verdant valleys and imposing hills, this ‘Scotland of the east’ is a magnet for nature lovers. It is best known for cherrapunjee, which records an annual rainfall of 10,000 mm a year. The manmade umiam lake is a heaven for anglers and water sport fans, and the orchid lake resort, constructed on its banks amidst a pine forest, is the perfect space for rest and relaxation. Facilities for kayaking, water skating and water cycling are offered here too. One of meghalaya’s most wondrous spectacles are the living root bridges, created by the khaki and jaintia communities. These bridges, which are made from the still- growing roots of rubber trees, have outlasted bridges built using modern technology.
