A Portuguese flavour pervades diu. The forts and buildings are all interesting examples of Portuguese architecture- the fort de mar, a massive fort bilt in 1541, is still forbidding, even though the elements have chipped away at it over the countries-its double moat and rows of cannons must have, at one time, dissuaded many an enemy. Legend has it that the fort was built by vasco d agama, and while there are enough reasons to doubt the claim, it only adds to the mystical air that pervades the fort even today. Roundabouts, diu style- these quaint traffic islands just reinforce the singular nature of diu’s architecture. The white washed facades and spires of the city’s churches and ancient buildings contrast with the lush green of the landscape, lending a Mediterranean air to the town.
